This means a person may carry a specific gene mutation that causes no symptoms in them personally, but could still be passed on to their child. Carrier status often has no visible signs or symptoms, which is why many people never realize they are carriers until they undergo testing.

Carrier Screening – What You Should Know

Carrier genetic screening allows you to obtain important information in advance:

• Whether you are a carrier of a specific genetic condition
• Whether there may be a risk for your future child

Carrier screening is a genetic test that identifies whether you carry certain inherited disorders, even when you are completely healthy. If both partners are carriers of the same condition, there is a possibility that the condition could be passed on to their child. Being a carrier does not mean you are ill,  it is simply valuable information that helps you plan more thoughtfully. If both partners are carriers of the same genetic condition:

• There is a 25% chance the child will inherit the condition
• A 50% chance the child will also be a carrier
• A 25% chance the child will inherit neither mutation and be completely unaffected
